Executive Summmary

Project Title:

Moline Public Library Website Redesign

Project Type:

Solo Class Project

  • Imagined Scenario
  • Fabricated Client/Stakeholder
  • Class + Instructor Feedback provided

Opportunity

This assignment required a redesign of the information architecture a real library website. The process included a project proposal, user interviews, a literature review and research deliverables, and a full evaluation and content audit of the existing information architecture on a real library website.

A final information architecture was created through a process of iteration and user testing on wireframes and workflows using the Optimum Workshop user research Suite.

Goals

  1. Provide an accurate analysis of user and client painpoints via research and content auditing
  2. Identify and adress both primary and secondary user needs
  3. Keep end-users at the center of design decisions to ensure the site’s designs and information architecture meet users’ needs.

Challenge

In this imagined scenario, staff of the Moline Public Library in Moline, IL requested a review and redesign of their current website, molinelibrary.com. The site struggled with its information architecture. In short, the ways in which users must navigate the site do not effectively promote finding and understanding of information. The librarians needed their website to help users navigate an extensive amount of content and achieve their information-related goals without becoming lost, confused, or frustrated.

Solution

Redesign the information architecture of molinelibrary.com from the ground up using best user research practices, literature reviews, ideation and iteration, testing, and evaluation.:

Deliverables

  • Data reports and presentations
  • Sitemaps and Screenflows

Process

Introduction

Setting up the project and scenario

Imagined Scenario

The staff of the Moline Public Library in Moline, IL, reached out to NavX Design Studio to review and redesign their current website, molinelibrary.com. The site struggled with its information architecture (IA), meaning that the ways in which users must navigate do not effectively promote finding and understanding of information. The librarians needed their website to help users navigate an extensive amount of content and achieve their goals without becoming lost, confused, and/or frustrated.

Identified Painpoints

  • Visually, the Global Navigation* is split between links on a menu at the top of the page, and a set of icons on the bottom of the page, above the footer.
  • Most webpages accessed through the global navigation (Child Pages) feature inconsistent local navigation menus.
  • Nearly all of the webpages that appear to be children of the global navigation pages are, in actuality, nested within a different, underlying location (called a subdirectory)
  • The breadcrumb trails* do not always match the actual navigational path taken.
  • Some of the body text and headings appear similar to hyperlinks* but are not interactive.
  • The footer would benefit from cleanup and reorganization
  • The cluttered and confusing local navigation causes undue cognitive strain on users and hinders their goals. Other issues will likely be identified as the project goes on (Rosenfeld et al., 2015).

  • Created and presented project brief to stakeholders.

Week 2 - User Interviews

  • Formation of user interview questions to assess users and context (See Appendix C in report for interview questions).

  • Located, recruited, and interviewed 2 participants fitting target demographic (library users).

Week 3 - Literature Review & Research; Personas & Task Table

Task Tables
Priority Task Value by Persona

Personas created from user research were used to determine key tasks for user to accomplish on the library website. Each table represents a level of priority (high, medium, low) and each persona is a assigned a number (see priority scale) representing the amount of value each task is for their goals. See personas for reference.

  • Used content analysis to create a classification scheme.

  • Created draft Sitemap in Adobe XzD based on classification scheme and critical tasks.

Week 5 - IA Evaluation and Revisions

  • Utilized the Optimal Workshop tool Treejack to assess the labeling structure and taxonomy with live participants.

  • Revised new information architecture based on data.

Week 6 - Drafting Wireframes & Workflows; Participant Testing

  • Drafted wireframe sketches of the proposed homepage and several key workflows which represented the essential navigation pathways; then revised with UX team’s feedback.

  • Tested the proposed navigation structure by uploading wireframes into the Chalkmark tool in Optimal Workshop.

  • Tested with live participants; then iterated sitemaps based on data.
